Sport Relief 2010 at Sainsbury's Hempstead Valley

Sainsbury's colleagues with Gillingham FC players

Kent's largest Sainsbury's at Hempstead Valley organised a range events as part of their fundraising campaign for Sport Relief.

Customers could also come and meet Barry Fuller, Simon King & Tom Wynter from Gillingham FC at Sainsbury's Hempstead Valley Friday 19th March. Customers gave voluntary donations in return for signed autographs.

Sport Relief is back! As one of the UK's biggest fundraising events, Sport Relief brings the entire nation together to get active, raise cash and change lives. Fundraising has already begun at Sainsbury's Hempstead Valley with the release of exclusive Sport Relief merchandise and will culminate with colleagues, customers and Medway residents limbering up for an action packed Sport Relief Weekend from Friday 19th to Sunday 21st March.

On Saturday 20th February, Sainsbury's Hempstead Valley kicked off their fundraising events with a "Sports Relief Challenge" in-store. Medway Council's sports development team promoted the event, where customers spent 30 seconds on an exercise bike. The eventual winner received a month's free membership to Medway Sports Park. Customers also signed up to the "Medway Sports Relief Mile", at Capstone Farm Park, on the day.

With the theme of this year's Sport Relief campaign being, ‘Rise to the Challenge,' colleagues at Hempstead Valley store will be doing just that.

Kevin Smith from Sainsbury's Hempstead Valley will be running the Sports Relief mile at the Dartford Football Club with Sainsbury's Chief Executive Justin King on Saturday 20th March.

Other fundraising activities involved will be a sports computer-game competition for customers, plus 60 colleagues will be taking part in a bowling tournament at Chatham AMF bowling.

To round off the fundraising activities, the Sainsbury's superstars will be involved in a huge football match. The colleagues will be facing the mighty Gillingham Anchorians at Darland Banks on Sunday 28th March. Kick off is at 4pm.

Eddie Worth, store manager said: "In 2008 Sainsbury's colleagues helped raise a fantastic amount for Sport Relief and this year we hope to top it! Supporting this well loved charity is not just an opportunity to transform lives in some of the world's poorest countries but also a means of helping our local community as UK charities like Wisdom Hospice can also benefit from funds raised through Sport Relief."

From a night of cracking TV on Friday, right through to the Sainsbury's Sport Relief Mile at Capstone Farm Park on Sunday 21st, it promises to be a brilliant weekend.
